“Foregrounding: Bronzes by Beverly Penn” is on display now inside the New Semantics Gallery at Cedarhurst Center for the Arts in Mt Vernon, IL from May 13 through July 23, 2023!

“I have been around plants my entire life and I recently became fascinated with, concerned about and dedicated to the idea that plants are generally overlooked and they are so essential for a healthy planet, healthy ecosystems and they are essential to our existence really,” Penn said. “So the whole goal of making work that is exclusively about plants is to try to bring attention to the fact that they are often overlooked.

My goal is to compose the questions in a way that it is so fascinating that it causes people to potentially think about their interaction and how they may come up with possible solutions with the dilemma of plants going extinct at a rate that is extreme at this point because of climate change,” Penn said. “I try to engage people to a larger awareness that this is all happening around us and it is a system that we take for granted and maybe don’t realize the slow and steady demise of the plant world.” - Beverly Penn

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander He

In honor of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, we are featuring “Stay Woke Buddha 1” by artist Binh Danh.

Born in Vietnam in 1977, Danh’s family fled to the United States two years later. They continued observing traditional Vietnamese customs, especially Buddhist worship of ancestors. Thus, says Danh, he grew up “meditating on death and its influence on the living.” More recently, Danh has experimented with Daguerreotypes—a 19th century photographic technique in which a light-sensitive, highly polished, silver-plated copper sheet is exposed to light and produces a single image. Using this, he has depicted charged places: the high-school-turned-prison Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in Phon Penh, the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge, Cambodia’s famous Khmer temple Angkor Wat, the city of San Francisco, and America’s National Parks. These works’ mirrored surfaces superimpose the face of the viewer onto the images, making the viewer complicit with the scene.

In the Atrium: Carrie Marill

Painter Carrie Marill divides ornament down to its basic components–shape, pattern, line, color, and dimension as the foundations of both human perception and artistic expression. Eschewing the delineation between fine art and folk art, and influenced by diverse art movements and theories, Marill’s works seem to extend into a separate dimension, a place of shape and color and clean, bright forms in sharp relief. Marill investigates abstract ideas and concepts surrounding how closely interconnected the lives of all living creatures might be. “They say the best place to start bird watching is in your own backyard,” says Marill, “so that’s what I do. The challenge in this work is drawing out the beauty in the mundane and frankly tragic things I see every day.” These views of the essential matter of our physical world, organized into startling patterns and unexpected geometries, suggest a luminous shared space of human pleasure and aesthetic inquiry.

In the verdant paintings of David Kroll, the natural world is mediated through human made objects of beauty or meaning. Centrally located vessels, globes, or memento mori are portrayed with the same serene elegance as the ecosystems surrounding them, which take the form of vines, flowers, and striking ornamental birds or fish, each flickering anatomy captured in precise detail. Compositionally, Kroll’s oil on linen works resemble classical still-life paintings, yet the scenes he devises are cleverly surreal and alive with mysterious motion and potential. Kroll’s delicate and exquisitely painted flora and fauna exist in a lush and timeless dreamspace. The artist remarks: “I paint personal refuges and interior landscapes… I try to create a connection–however fleeting–between the viewer and the power of landscape, the web of life, the idea of nature itself.”

The meditative garden of organic and ornamental forms expands into three-dimensional space in Kim Cridler’s vessels. In large-scale, immaculately fabricated works, Cridler intertwines the human pursuits of containment and ornament with the often unpredictable patterns of organic generation. Constructed of woven steel rods, Cridler’s vessels are embellished with unexpected organic treasures: the enchanting forms of birds, leaves, and flowers glimmer around the edges. These treasures are fabricated with a jeweler’s precision, from brass and beeswax, silver and horsehair, and gleaming faceted stones. Cridler remarks, “My work and research is rooted in the belief that the forms, processes, and materials that give flesh to objects of utility and ornament are rich with content–the tension between structure and decoration, the intellectual and the physical, the cognitive and emotive.”
